Coppicing

We're lucky here in that we have lots of hazels, a few ash trees and the odd cherry, that we coppice to provide our firewood.  We've never yet bought any wood for the woodburner, and have a healthy store in the barn.  Today we did a bit of logging, but mainly to get some offending branches free from the electricity wire that brings our supply down the drive.  It never ceases to amaze me how big these lengths of wood are when they're on the ground - they don't look that size when they're growing!

We tidied up the barn a bit too, restacking some wood and starting new stacks of wood that was taken down a couple of weeks ago.  We've generally been able to dry it off for three years before burning it.  You really do have to plan well in advance if you want to keep warm for free in the Creuse!
